Through this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), the National Cancer Institute (NCI) intends to advance our understanding of: the modes of transmission of Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), also called human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8); the biology of the initial steps of infection; and the risk factors for infection.

This funding opportunity announcement solicits research project grant (R01) applications that propose to utilize a syndemics (synergistic epidemic) framework to elucidate the role that social, economic, environmental, behavioral, structural, psychological factors play in promoting the synergistic interactions and clustering of heart, lung, blood, and sleep (HLBS) comorbidities and multi-morbidities among people with HIV at the population level.

Basic research in the area of HIV-associated comorbidities has generally focused on the analysis of a pathway or a potential mechanism that contributes to the development of a single, specific HIV-associated comorbidity or end-organ disease. However, evidence indicates that there could be shared biological mechanisms that underlie the development of certain comorbidities, especially in the context of HIV infection.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) intends to support investigators who have interest and capability to join efforts for the discovery of in vivo chemical probes for novel brain targets. It is expected that applicants will have in hand the starting compounds (validated hits) for chemical optimization and bioassays for testing new analog compounds.
